Not too sure. But some applications do get along quite well without too many updates. Personally I installed this for someone else to use and as far as I know it works ok for that person. And I do use legacy low powered computers that would struggle with many modern offerings.
I do note there is a bugs section and that includes reports of it getting crashy but many of the bugs seem rather old. Anyone with suitable skills could volunteer to try to help.
I suppose there are alternatives, but that depends on what it is that is wanted for instance is it the photo editing, painting or drawing type features; and what OS is used.
Pinta is a nice simple paint type program with simple photo editing features.
Unfortunately many users of trying digital photograph will use smart phones and their software now. Those creating any artwork or diagrams will probably use vector graphics so possibly Pinta is now in a rather small niche. This forum does not seem particularly active, and that can not be a good omen.
Fingers crossed let's hope support continues.
