When selecting gradient a second option to use transparency mode is available to allow gradient from solid colour to transparent. Really usefull tool from Paint.Net

+1! This is not gradient with a transparent color. It's a mode. In this mode, the primary color is opacity and the secondary color is transparency. So, with this mode, you can make a transparency gradient on a picture, so you can make complex fade-in between multi-pictures/layers (see screenshot).
Note : if primary color is fully transparent, the gradient would make the layer (or selection) transparent, because this would create a transparency to transparency gradient. If secondary color is fully transparent, the gradient would make nothing because it would create an opacity to opacity gradient.
This is very usefull on Paint.Net. PS : sorry for my bad english, i'm french.
